Pulkit Bhatnagar's experience during his internship in Jio Studios.
Pulkit Bhatnagar’s experience during his internship in Jio Studios.

The revolutionary Reliance Jio changed how we perceived internet data! The next offering? A 4G smartphone that costs almost next to nothing! Billed as the world’s largest startup, the company has become a hub for young minds, working on revolutionary ideas. So, an Internship in Jio, even the in-house Studios, is a must-have opportunity.

Worth Rs. 150,000 crores, Reliance Jio has several opportunities, working in the different departments under the ‘Jio’ brand. Internships in Jio are available to engineers and MBAs – and this is the tale of one such opportunity. This is Pulkit Bhatnagar’s experience of working with Jio Studios as a marketing intern.

Tell us a bit about your educational background.

I hail from Delhi and graduated in BCA from Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU). After which I worked with American Express as an Accounts Protection Specialist. In 2016 I joined the MBA course at NMIMS Hyderabad to specialise in marketing and operations.

How did you get the internship at Jio?

I was recruited through my Summer Campus Placement process at my college. It was a fairly standard recruitment process.

What was your work profile at the internship? What kind of projects did you work on?

I was placed in Jio Studios which is the marketing and content wing of Reliance Jio. It is a strategic business unit (SBU) of Jio which specialises in marketing, branding, content, advertising, celebrity content management etc. It is probably one of the most exciting departments to work in Jio!

I was working out of their BKC Office in Mumbai in a pure marketing and branding profile.

Jio Studios works on Jio campaigns as well as other big brands, they work as any regular communications agency.

As a marketing intern, I did not have any specific project but was involved in several projects as and when needed on priority. It was exciting as I got to work on major brands, every day we used to get briefs about certain communications that needed to go out.

I got to work on the marketing of existing and upcoming Jio products. I learnt about branding and designing 360 degree integrated marketing communication campaigns.

I was lucky that I got assigned to a senior mentor at Jio, he was highly experienced and was proactive in assigning work to me.

Do you recollect any special moments from your internship?

The highlight of my internship was surely working for our boss who comes from an illustrious TV career, he is a marketing and TV content whiz having worked with prestigious companies like Star TV. Just the insights he gave us and anecdotes he shared from his work experience was a big learning experience. He even took the best performers to meetings with senior Jio executives and Bollywood stars!

Another exciting project that I was a part of was the project for 2019 General Elections campaign. It was interesting because I had previous internship experience of working on the social media team of a political party.

What were your takeaways or learning from the internship experience?

The thing I noticed in our company was that we had a flat structure amongst the teams and we used to have open meetings. Our boss was very proactive and up to date with everything.

I have learnt that there is no alternative to hard work.

It is also crucial that you speak out and showcase your work and research effectively to the right people.

The marketing and communications industry is so fast and creative that your work or insights can easily be taken up as their own and you may lose credit!

You have also previously interned with WWF India. How was that experience and how did
you get it?

I did my winter internship at WWF India at their Hyderabad office. It was my own initiative, I wrote directly to the Director at the WWF India. I was called for a selection process and was selected. I worked in the Director’s office on several projects; the major project was the execution of events for Earth Hour. It was interesting and a peek into the NGO sector.

You have AMCAT certifications. How have they helped you?

I took the AMCAT certification during my final year of graduation. With a small fee I got access to a wide variety of graduate job opportunities. I also publish my AMCAT certifications on my Linkedin profile which can be seen by my network and prospective recruiters!

Do you have any advice for students seeking internships in the Telecom sector or marketing
internships?

Keeping a tab on trends in the most crucial factor, especially when it comes to doing well in the interviews. It is good to keep a tab on industry reports from PwC, KPMG etc for telecom reports. Regarding marketing you can follow marketing and advertising blogs to keep abreast of latest communication campaigns.

Pondering Poppy
Pondering Poppy

Hello, Interns!

Who is the most annoying person you have met in your entire life? I have a list which contains 20 people and I have met like 200, this year itself. So, my list is topped by this sack of 10 % of air and 20 % of a control-freak and 60 % water– trust me that is not true but he seems dehydrated! Or maybe he is just a 24×7 stuck-up. He thinks he is managing everything and supervising everyone, but he just has an ascendancy over all of us at Peach Designs as he is the Boss! Who calls a marketing intern at 8 in the morning to the office? But anyway, now that I am here, posing as a marketing intern, doing this menial internship, I will just start working.

Kidding! I am super idle for today. What do you think a PR Internship entails? I am just doing research work. As I happen to read what this firangi PR and Ad agency has achieved and the kind of work culture they have, I wonder about their composition. Speaking of which, they have people from all educational backgrounds working in Public Relations! And what do we have?

How liberating would it be if, in our nation, even we could study Mathematics and Arts together? If we could learn what are the fundamentals of life and also be a musician. Oh, musicians don’t have a degree! Here, not all artists can earn a paper scroll that would authenticate their “natural talent”. Or we could enrol for the off-beat careers and still have society’s acceptance and respect. We recognise talent or any skill based on our convenience. If that weren’t the case, I would not be studying B. Tech (IT) and doing this internship without being judged for being an aimless 20-year old. But, I am not. One day I will establish a Pakery (Bakery that has both cakes and pies), total firangi style. And, I know it will seem like a directionless career. I ask, why?

Why can’t I study writing along with marketing? Why can’t I become an air hostess and study business? Why can’t I study physics with a specialisation in interiors? Our top colleges polish brilliant minds every year– only to make them appear like factory produced genii. Only a few fall off the track to find their calling and succeed! That is how start-ups manifest, right?

Why are the bars to qualify as a skilful person set so high? Is it because of the population? I enrolled for bachelors in Technology because becoming a lawyer was “too hectic” and studying Chemistry in the B. Sc tag was “too shallow”. And here I am, aimlessly running away from my B. Tech.

I think it’s time that we don’t allow 60 plus-year-old politicians to make our education just an agenda. Most of their brain cells are dead (courtesy: ageing). Let us for once, try celebrating humans as the most powerful creature– possessing multiple skills. Let us try to do what we want and not what others are doing.

That is why I want to bake cakes and also major in Physics. But I am blogging, sitting in an Ad agency. How twisted could I be? How eccentric could I be? Anyway, it is 10:00 AM and the leech (Boss) just crawled in. Got to go give him his to-do list, which I only copied from his computer. The man likes hand written notes! *Rolls eyes*

The story of Shubham who did an internship at hike.
The story of Shubham who did an internship at hike.

Remember those super cute emoji? Hike Messenger changed the rules of online chatting and texting with a sweep. And while the company grew bigger and bigger with each passing day, we decided to peep into what it is like doing an internship at Hike.

Our guest intern of the day is Shubham Gupta. An avid writer, part-time blogger and a super-quick learner, Shubham found a place for his great sense of humor in Hike.

Tell us about the Company you interned for.

“I interned for Hike, a super-cool startup, managed by some brilliant like minded young employees. Innovation is their key agenda. Not only they use latest & best available technology (both in hardware & software) but they also maintain their reputation of sporting the best start-up culture.”

“Hike has always been ahead of its competitors and has collaborated with the “Make-In-India” initiative.”

What were you looking for in your internship?

“Exposure to latest technology and how it’s actually used. I wanted to put my theoretical knowledge into practical implementation, and of course, get to know about the real corporate world environment,” says Shubham who learned a lot about technology and the implementation of new ideas during his internship at Hike.

Would you recommend Letsintern to others? If yes, Why?

“Yes, Letsintern is an easy to use platform which provides smooth access to latest internships available,” says Shubham who feels all ready for the job market.

“Rather than sending your resumes to 1000’s of companies asking for internship and be disappointed, why not save time and focus what really matters? This is where Letsintern comes into picture.”

In the end, do you have any tips that can help other students in getting a good internship?

Shubham never really had to struggle to get an internship. So we had to ask him to dole out some advice for all the young people looking for internships.

“Firstly, discuss with YOURSELF where YOUR key interest actually lies. Don’t just keep on applying for internships just for sake of getting an internship.”

He further adds, “Do a little research and make a list of companies which work in the field that you are preferring. Learn the ‘basic’ about the field in which the company you are applying deals in. For example, I learned basics of Android because I knew that HIKE is a mobile -app company. It’s important to note that you do not have to be a pro in the field. Companies understand this fact that you are a fresher.”

Shubham Gupta with his pearls of wisdom is surely a great candidate to look up at.

If you want to read more such inspiring and educating internships stories then you can check out our Letsintern blog. You can write your own success story with some great internships at Letsintern. There are hordes of virtual internships and part-time internships available there to help you maintain a healthy pocket, go out and be a success and yet maintain a college-work balance.

Marketing Internship
Lies, is that life?

Hello, Interns!

Have you ever been obsessed with a song? Duh! Everyone has. While Bruno Mars sang to me what he likes since last night– talk about “earworms”, right now at 8:30 am I wonder how we, the marketing people brainwash all you lay people. Just like sticky songs, we manipulate the words and phrases that resonate with your desires to make you swipe that card for our profits. And trust me, we make you impulsive and your life chaotic.

So, as Bruno happens to be an icky sticky MJ substitute, I am trying to focus on being a reliable Marketing Intern so that my father gets me a car! Well, he promised me if I am able to complete this internship and my college just fine, I will get some wheels. But, as I am all about the lyrics and not the bass, it makes me elated as to what all luxury Bruno has! And what do I have? A boring Marketing Internship where I just have to jot his to-do list down on a paper from his computer! Urgh! (The man likes hand written notes! *Rolls eyes*)

And this advertising ka keeda is bugging me so much! I can’t focus on anything other than choosing a car! Why would these much-celebrated cars offer air-bags only for the driver? Can the co-passenger not bang his head too? The concept of “less is more” has really fooled the audience. Someone, please tell me how much of a difference is bridged between a Toyota and Chevrolet, an Alto and Ritz, a Benz and BMW? All the automobile engineers, stay calm because my point here is it’s all about the cost and maintenance, eventually. Right? All one has to do is hit the ignition, steer and drive safe, may be? But do you guys see, how we are instilled with thoughts that a BMW makes you look fancy, wealthy, successful and all that ish!

Anyway, ultimately it is the Sales Executive that “makes” a car, not the opposite. So, this is why sales people have to be persuasive, this is why we marketers have to be focused and manipulative. But look at me, a marketing intern falling under the same pretence of marketing for a car! Gosh! I really want a car but which one do I really like?

“When you look with your eyes, they all look nice.

But, when you look twice, it’s all lies”.

Advertising, you lying?
Advertising, you lying?

Hello, Interns!

How observant are you? How keen are you to realise any kind of shift in your surroundings? Have you ever wondered how your surroundings frame your mindset? Yes, that is how we marketing folks earn– feeding off your brain. And as a Marketing Intern at Peach Ad Agency (owned by a Leech), I finally have a task to accomplish! Yay, maybe?

Apart from jotting down Leech’s his to-do list down on a paper from his computer, (Urgh! The man likes hand written notes! *Rolls eyes*) I am supposed to ideate an ad for our client. The client wants a “catchy” ad for their new clothing line. Sorry, can’t take names but their expectations are silly. Just equally silly as our trendy Indian Ads. Can you even guess what these people smoke up? Because when I wonder, I have no decent answer. Don’t agree? Let me give you an example. So, guess what is this about?

A bag of cement. Cement. And to popularise that you need a woman in red twirling around. I saw this ad that showed two ghosts; one crying over his demise and the other trying to pacify him. Ghost No. 2 got pissed as the weeping Ghost No. 1 won’t stop. Ghost No. 2 suggested that they should go and watch a movie. So, both the ghosts start running; passing through trees, people and everything in between. Meanwhile, Ghost No. 2 tries warning Ghost No. 2 about a wall but it’s too late! Apparently, Ghost No. 1 dies again after banging his head on a wall constructed with Hathi Cement. Well, I guess Hathi cement trumps JK Cement. But where is logic? I guess we trump logic.

Imagine how easy our lives would be if all of this advertising was practical. Chivalry is long dead, you could seek relationships by spraying deodorants. And you could also buy them based on the spray count. You could turn into a man of chocolate (because that makes women go all oolala on you). But what if you are allergic to deodorants? Well, you could get high on some Paan Masala and hallucinate about women greeting you! If this also fails for you, you could always use a perfume that validates that you are a “He” and this is how you get a “She”. And all the rat poison is intelligently designed as all the rats in your house would consume the poison in your house but die out side of your accommodation! Are these mice really wise than our Mad Men?

We all know we can only excel if we use fairness creams, greasy hair oils and consume Paan Masala. No, wonder our education system doesn’t give a flying damn about our education. And what’s the matter with some jingles! Oh, regarding your education, please stop aiming for IITs, IIMs, NITs or even decent colleges because IIN is there, no! Just like that bakery kid, you could learn how to “invent” things by simply reading words like “velocity”, “physics”, “angle” and a few Xs and zeroes because that is what drones are made of!

No wonder our future is so bleak. Take my advice and shut that idiot box down. Oh, and remember to close your bathrooms because either Lara Dutta (disguised as a reporter) or that-famous-man-from-TV can just barge in.

Because to hell with logic.

As The Saints sang

Cheap advertising
your lying
you never gonna get me what I want
all that smooth talking brain Washing

Anyway, I got to go. Mess with few heads.

Times Internet Group is the Mecca for all the budding writers and journalists. It is that one place you know you need to be to be taken seriously as a writer and that is what drove Vani to fill her intern diary with a fling with The Times Internet Group.

Tell us something about the company you interned for

“There is nothing left to say about Times Internet Group as people know enough about it already. I would just like to add that it is an amazing, fast-paced place to work in. I am so glad that I got the opportunity to be a part of it. I remember writing story snippets every day and feeling immensely satisfied with the kind of work I was doing.”

What were you looking for in an internship

“Honestly, I was just looking for something pretty to make my resume stand out. Having said that, I was still exploring myself as a writer and trying to determine my area of interest. I wanted to do something that would give me the opportunity to spread my wings, make me feel confident about myself and my writing and pave way for newer and better job opportunities.”

Would you recommend Letsintern to others? If yes, why?

“Yes, I will definitely recommend Letsintern to other,” quips in Vani who feels Letsintern is a perfect platform for students to search and apply for various internships.

In the end, do you have any tips for other students

“I just want to say that you should follow your heart and try your absolute best to make a career in the field you are interested in.”

Vani who confesses that for the longest time she struggled to identify what she wanted to do feels an internship is a good way to discover yourself.

“You get to know what you like and what you dislike and whether you can spend eight to nine hours everyday on something or not.”

An internship can prep you up to take on higher responsibilities and be job ready. Vani advises using this opportunity to discover one’s own self.

Vani, struggling with the idea of identity and juggling with being job ready is someone to look up to.

Flu...
Flu…

Hello, Interns!

Today is about a slightly evil confession of a marketing intern. Well, evil sounds too massive. I would say it was an unhealthy deed that I did. Only because it involves germs. To be honest, I enjoyed the past few days here at Peach Designs. I actually liked being a marketing intern. Only because I wasn’t bossed around by Leech, as he has the flu.

So, this all started 10 days ago when one by one, the other interns started applying for leaves and work-from-home. Our crowded intern-alley became spacious, suddenly. The third day when I actually noticed the Software Development Intern gone, I breathed out a sigh of relief. And little did I know that I breathed in the sick germs he left. There is nothing more than the flu that I despise. I just do not like the entire schema of the flu; with the distasteful experiences comprising of phlegm, bacteria and mucus. And to my sweet horror, not only do I have to sleep with my mouth open, I get nightmares because of fever. The fifth day, I remember how I hallucinated in my sleep; people coming in and out of my house, someone throwing me off the balcony and seeing characters from the novel I am currently reading.

Funny, how the brain meddles with my reality. And it’s hilarious how we, humans are also nothing but clusters of bacteria. Why, do you ask? Well, aren’t we all at times deadly to someone? So, while I suffered from the flu for an entire week, I couldn’t get myself to forget the fact that it was because of Leech that I caught this annoying sickness in the first place! How, do you ask? Well, he made me sit and work with the sick interns in the infected zone!

Day 7, I gulped a few pills and crawled to his office, brainstorming ideas for a new client. I remembered how I got scolded for forgetting a teensy detail in my presentation. To which I was told, “You can’t ignore that sort of detail”. Actually, I was busy wondering why someone named a drug “Influenza 200″? Any guesses? Yes! It is a way to get into people’s head, only to get their sales up! So, you see, that’s the thing about marketing!

Today is the 10th day and I see that Leech’s cabin is empty and it’s the third day that he is sick. Turns out my unhealthily evil deed of sneezing on him (a deliberate attempt) finally worked! You see, that’s the thing about flu; it is contagious.

You can’t ignore that sort of Air

So, today this doesn’t seem like a boring Marketing Internship where I just have to jot his to-do list down on a paper from his computer! Urgh! (The man likes hand written notes! *Blissful Times*)

My Work As A Marketing Intern

This is what happened 6 months ago: I saw an ad vacancy for a Marketing Intern at Peach Designs and without even thinking, I applied. It is my first wild guess that without even thinking Leech decided to hire ME. Poor fellow, he must have thought that a marketing intern would be helpful. It is my second wild guess that he assumed I would be his lackey! He wanted a muppet disguised as his marketing intern! Anyway, other than serving him coffee and hand-written notes, this time, I was actually given a task. A task that was all about this marketing internship.

My Work As A Marketing Intern

It is all about the trends. Remember, how I told you about my doubts related to my course and this internship? Well, somehow the tasks and the whole concept of selling your mere ideas to the huge masses convinced me to pursue this marketing internship. As an intern, I learnt a lot about the practical aspects of markets, business and the Indian advertising. I learnt new ways of connecting with clients and how to build a customer base online. I am hoping that this experience will give me an edge in the job market. No doubt I have gained a life time experience; professionally and socially.

As I previously mentioned about the ad that I am working on for a clothing company, the entire gig is actually interesting. The fun part was learning about our target audience and various industries involved. I also learnt what roles these elements play and how our company can improve its businesses. I talked to a lot of people and in some cases made friends with them and I loved the new knowledge I have gained!

Anyway, can you guess what happened next? So, I had this idea and as expected Leech didn’t approve of it. And I pat myself as I say this: instead of bickering about anything, I did some extra hours in the office and changed the ideas completely. Any, guesses what happened next? Not only did Leech approve my ideas for the ad, our client loved them! It is funny how I didn’t want to go forward with this internship at first and now I am actually happy working in it!

Now, the question is what do I do next? Should I look forward to studying marketing after my graduation?

Research Internship
Research Internship

“Seeing non-living things such as electronics interacting with the human lives has always excited me. I was looking for research internships related to programming the same non-living things like microcontrollers to make functional.”

This childlike excitement is still there in me

Meet Arpit Jadon, our featured intern whose interests lie in embedded systems, control systems and Internet of Things (IoT). This hard-working intern was looking for a research internship to fulfil his interests in designing things which could benefit the mankind in some way.

Glad about his research internship experience with Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) he says, “working and being recognized for such kind of research work is the only desire that I have had from a pretty long time. I was looking for some research work which could resonate with my areas of interest and something which I could use to enhance my skills.”

During his 2nd academic year of college, Arpit scored the Summer Research Fellowship from Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) under the Science Academies’ Summer Research Fellowship Programme 2017. He says, “it is basically a research programme and IAS is the main coordinating academy. I went to IIT Gandhinagar to work for my research project and the stipend provided by the academy was ten thousand per month including travel expenses.”

My Research Internship With IAS

Arpit, who is quite happy with the internship experience he had with IAS says, “the freedom that I was having there was amazing. I could go to the lab anytime of the day! Each person was ready to help unconditionally in the labs. During the day, I used to go to the lab at around 10 am and there was no limitation on the return time. Sometimes I used to work till 3 or 4 in the morning because I never felt like I was working on something which was imposed on me. Instead, the only thought that used to encourage me to work for the whole day was that this is my thing that I am working on and I will have a full share of happiness when I will complete it.”

I owe a lot to my colleagues for making that internship a memorable part of my life

“I am really grateful that I had this chance to complete my research internship. I had applied to one more internship but this was my call. I think Letsintern is a good platform for students to learn about internships. I would  definitely recommend it to the people searching for internships.”

Arpit Jadon, a successful intern with a shining bright resume suggests:

“Firstly you have to be clear about what sort of an internship you want. If you want to pursue a research-oriented career then research internships are the ones you should go for. If you want to work in an industry then an industrial internship is a right choice. For bagging getting a quality internship, you have to prepare yourself well. Maintaining a good grading point (as far as possible) and acquiring skills relevant to your field of interest is the path which could lead you to the place you desire.”

Inspired much by Arpit’s internship story You can begin yours too! Just apply for exciting internships. For more updates stay tuned to the Letsintern blog. If you want to feature next on our blog and be a star of our Intern diary, then you need to read this.

‘A Travel internship is nothing close to what I expected!’

Bharati's brush with a travel internship had her turn into an all-purpose intern.
Bharati’s brush with a travel internship had her turn into an all-purpose intern.

A travel internship can come across an exciting opportunity with the dreams of traveling to exotic destinations. However, the ground reality is that a travel company is like any other company with objectives of making sales and achieving revenues.

Bharathi Kanodia, a student of B.A Mass Communication at Bhavan’s College, Hyderabad shares her experience of working with a travel startup.

Where do you intern currently and how did you land the internship?

I intern at a niche experiential travel company, Offbeat Tracks which is based out of Hyderabad. I learned about the internship from our alumni group as the founder, Vandana Vijay, is an alumna from my college. I was seeking a summer internship and this message came up at the right time. I went through an interview round following which I was briefed about my role prior to onboarding as an intern.

What kind of work do you do at the internship?

I have been working with the company for about 6 months now and I can say that this was nothing close to what I expected! I had figured that a travel internship meant actually travelling to exotic destinations but working in a travel startup is by no means a holiday!

We have a small team working at our office and I get to do a lot of work across various functions. I am involved in generating sales leads, converting the leads, preparing the trip itineraries, co-coordinating with vendors for accommodation and travel as well as content creation.

I have realized that at a startup everyone dons many hats and you have to get involved in several activities at the same time.

Do you like working in a startup?

I don’t have any other intern experience to compare to but I love the work culture here. It’s a friendly workspace with a small team, this allows for a lot of learning. I work directly with the founder so I understand first-hand what goes on in building a company from the scratch. It’s certainly a lot of hard work!

We have these impromptu celebrations and weekend plans that help us bond. I like the young team and I feel like I fit in well.

What are the major takeaways from this internship experience?

Professionally, I have immense knowledge about the travel industry now. It’s been like a crash course in tourism management! I feel confident about planning a trip for anybody, anytime now! Personally, this has helped me in different ways like I have become more organised and am able to multi-task. I also used to be an introvert but the cold calls have given me the confidence to speak to anyone!

It has been tough to manage both studying and interning…

I have also learnt to manage my time better. I had started off with a summer internship but ended up extending my internship till October. It has been tough to manage both studying and interning, I had to manage both studying and interning, I had to refuse a lot of hanging out and chilling sessions with my friends but it’s been worth it.

Are there any special moments you would like to share about the internship?

Yes, I distinctly remember the first lead I converted to a sale. This person wanted a trip to Sikkim, a luxury trip for his family and I was able to give him what he required. It was an amazing feeling when the sale was converted and he booked the trip! I couldn’t believe that I was able to generate revenue directly for the company. It was a very satisfying feeling. It’s the tiny victories that count!

What are your future career goals; does this internship impact any of them?

I am a Mass Communication student and had dreams of a career in advertising. But this internship has opened up my horizon and given me more options. I am definitely considering coming back to the company for a full-time role after my graduation. Travel is something that excites me now, so the internship has succeeded in that!

My Sports Internship was a hands-on job training, shares IISA intern

Keen on a sports internship? Learn from Shashank's experience.
Keen on a sports internship? Learn from Shashank’s experience.

Sports has traditionally been a hobby and never seriously pursued as a career in India. However, today sports careers are booming and there is a huge scope for people who wish to pursue sports. From sports coaches to psychologists, there is a niche for everyone. We spoke to Shashank Khare, who is a Boxing medalist and is pursuing a sports internship. Here is what he had to say about his sports internship experience -

Give us your background and explain your interest in sports.

I have been in sports all my life and pursue a parallel career in boxing. I completed by graduation in B.Sc. (Sports Science) and was a gold medallist. I also completed a Sports Certification in Boxing conducted by the Netaji Subhash Institute of Sports.

Currently I am pursuing my Post Graduation in Sports at Lovely
Professional University. I have participated in boxing competitions and have been awarded the Best Boxer of Punjab University (2014) and won the Gold Medal (Junior category – 64kg) and AIU (All India Inter University) Bronze Medal.

Tell us about where you are interning and how did you get this opportunity?

I am interning at IISA (Imperial International Sports Academy), which was set up with the agenda of eradicating childhood obesity and spreading sports literacy in India. They have tied up with our college and provide internships for students in the final year. I went through an interview process and currently I am interning in Jaipur.

What do you do as a part of the sports internship?

IISA ties up with schools across India and provides sports infrastructure and faculty to promote sports and fitness. Essentially I am the representative of IISA in a school in Jaipur and undertake all the activities of IISA in the school. It is a wide range of activities including teaching the high school students basketball which is also my specialisation in PG.

It includes participating in events like Health-O-meter which is their flagship product and involves taking the health reports of the school children. I act as their basketball coach and assist them in inter-school events. I also interact with their parents in PTA meetings.

What have you learned in the internship?

This internship has been like hands-on job training for me. One of the careers that I can pursue after my education is to become a coach and this internship is providing me real life experience. One of the biggest learning is how people perceive sports; from where I come from – Moga, Punjab – sports is a part of life. Every child participates in sports all through their childhood and it is promoted even as a career.

However, in Jaipur it is a very different scenario, parents here are more focused on academic excellence. This is why I think such an organisation plays a vital role in promoting sports.

I have also learned how it is to interact with school management as a coach. It is tough to negotiate both time and infrastructure for sports activities especially where the focus is on academics. I have learned negotiation skills, convincing skills and other management skills like time management and talking to people.

What do you like about the internship? Any good experiences?

Yes, the students are the best part of the internship! I truly enjoy playing and teaching students about sports. Nothing binds people together like a love for sports and I am glad to bring a bit of happiness in their lives. I enjoy explaining the nuances of sports and why exactly we train in a particular way.

Sports make me feel alive and if I pursue a career in coaching it will be only for this!

What are your future career goals?

I am keen on doing a PhD in sports however I wish to have my own sports coaching program where I can train people for competitions and armed forces examinations. Sports careers are flourishing today and my classmates are planning for a variety of careers including coaching, teaching, sports nutritionist, trainer, sports publishing (Editor, Publisher), sports psychologist and even government jobs like DSO (District Sports Officer) and Sports Authority officials.

What advice do you have for other youngsters who wish to pursue a career in sports?

First of all, one needs to have a love for sports. It’s not a backup option or something you do because you can’t excel at other stuff. Most importantly, you need to have the technical know-how. Sport affects the body and if you are not aware you can put someone at physical risk!

Also, it’s always great if you can play a sport yourself, that way you can understand the psyche of a sportsperson better.

Keen on proving your mettle with a similar sports internship or even a teaching internship. Go and explore the Internship board on LetsIntern today.

Dos and Don’ts On Your First Day At Internship

first day at internship

Remember your first day at school? Remember how grumpy and whiny you were? Of course, we all remember our special firsts. Just like the first day at school, your first day at internship can be a defining moment of your life.

Whether it’s your first internship or your first real job, you can never really control the initial excitement and first-day jitters. As such, you might be scrounging the internet, looking for that perfect success formula to excel from the word ‘go’. But sadly or happily, there are no rights or wrongs on the first day of your internship.

No one expects you to know everything on the first day itself. However, if you are really looking to succeed then you need to keep certain internship tips in mind.

 The Do’s

– Ask for help

Your first day at work is meant for introduction, familiarizing with office, getting to know immediate colleagues and of course learning a bit about your work. In any situation where you feel under-confident about your work or information, go seek help.

Don’t think of your boss as a butcher with a knife hidden behind his back. He’s as human as you are (well, most of the times).

– Dress Right

Even if you’re interning at Vogue or IBM, you’re expected to dress well. The term ‘well’ is a bit subjective but you need to up your game and really dress for the job you are interning for.

If heels are your thing, put them on. If a tie around your neck makes you feel more confident, put it on. Whatever you do, just ensure that you look ‘professional and presentable’ at work.

– Prepare well

Acing the internship interview with all the knowledge about the company helped you ace the gig. Now you must carry on that knowledge and add to it during your tenure there.

You must be well prepared with all the whereabouts, number of offices, areas of operation, yearly turnover and any other major pieces of information about the company. This will show your interest and commitment to the company and the work you are doing.

The Don’ts

– Don’t ask Google-able questions

We’re all in for asking questions but any question that can be Googled must not be asked.

You might see your boss running around all the time and assume they have a lot of work at hand. However, it is rarely so. With so many things to look over, your boss might be pretty occupied most of the time and won’t have time for pointless questions.

So, be proactive – look up the internet before you ask questions.

– Don’t give an indication that you aren’t happy

You can barely do anything about an assignment that your boss drops on you. Cribbing, complaining and making that ‘I hate this place and this job’ face will only land you in the bad books of the big guys.

Honestly, you, your boss and his boss must have taken up some projects in life that they never liked. It is a part of work culture. You have to be high-spirited and accept all that comes your way with a big smile. And, it is all a part of the learning process, so accept it and grow with it.

– Don’t wait for opportunities

Yes, we all have heard that the right opportunities come knocking your door. However, in real life this is not so and you go chasing after it. Every job guide will tell you this and we are repeating it too -if your boss asks you to do A, B and C task; you must be pro-active and try doing A, B, C, D and if necessary, E.

If the worst comes to the worst, you might end up making a fool of yourself by doing it the wrong way. However, the extra effort you put in will count for a lot more and put you on the path to success.

Remember your first day at internship can be exciting and scary but that is okay. Even if it doesn’t go right, don’t worry! You will get plenty of opportunities to prove yourself. And, if you don’t then there are these success tips to keep picking you up and pointing you in the right direction.

turn internship into job

Summer internships will come to an end soon and you will get busy with your college course and placement preparation.

But the best way to end your internship would be to turn internship into job!

Right?

Absolutely!

If you like the internship you are doing and if it’s a great company and team then it would be the best thing to leave with a job in hand.

It will save you a lot of worry to get a placement and enjoy the final year of your college.

But, how exactly can this be achieved? You must be wondering!

Here are 7 easy steps to convert your internship to a full-time job–

Perform to the best of your ability and exceed expectations

This is one of the top internship tips for students regardless whether they are looking to convert an internship to job or not. An internship is your first step in a professional career and it will give you an immense boost if you do a great job at it. Generally, most managers don’t expect much from their interns but if you do a very good job they would want you on board full-time.

Showcase your work ethic and take initiatives

Your work ethic speaks much louder for you than you ever can! Work ethic means the combination of your discipline, commitment to work and responsibility. In fact, maintaining an excellent work ethic is one of the top job tips for freshers. So it’s fair that the same advice applies to you as well.

Also, take initiatives. If you are not being given work, ask for work. This will indicate that you don’t shy from responsibility and are mature enough to do a full-time job.

Identify problems & issues, but offer solutions

It’s easy to point problems, but the beauty lies in offering solutions. The best way to turn internship into job is to identify a problem or issue with the company and providing a solution. Now, this doesn’t mean letting the company know their coffee is bad! If you are an engineer find out if there is a bug you can solve, if you are into marketing find a way to reach new customers, etc. Provide solutions, manager’s love such employees!

Keep the feedback loop open and communicate with your supervisor

Most interns complain that their managers don’t pay enough attention to them and their work. This could be because you have not shown the right attitude or openness in taking feedback. Ask for direct feedback; always communicate about your work. This way your manager will know the work you are doing and will be able to assess if you can fit in the company for a full-time role.

Get a mentor within the company

Ideally, your assigned supervisor should be your mentor but nowhere is it written in any fresher guide that you cannot ask for help! You can always ask for support, guidance or direction from other team members and even other departments. Having a mentor in an organization can be very helpful, they can refer you for a full-time role and even call you back later on with any opportunities.

Keep in touch after the internship

Networking is one of the perks of doing an internship and you should make the most of it. Network with your team members, other departments, and even the managers. Also, make sure you connect with your managers even after you leave. If you don’t know what to say, just follow the news of the company and send in a comment. Or, wish them on festivals; it’s the best way to keep in touch. And if an opportunity arises later, they will keep you in mind.

Ask for a job

Yes, this might just be the top tip to turn internship into job! More often than not, students shy away from asking about job opportunities. Sometimes, managers don’t like to take the first step as they might be unsure of your plans after graduation. Whether you want a job or will go for higher studies, which is why it is best to clear the air and let them know that you would like a full-time job. They might just offer you one!

So does this give you enough ideas to start working on converting the internship? Let us know how it worked out in the comments below! And for more such internship advice follow our blog
